at an area of light rain. san leandro crossing 580 also moderate rain showers. foster city >> crossing to 80 as well in the south bay. heading further in the south bay you are also looking at areas of light rain to moderate as well. san jose has scattered showers this morning and heading into san francisco we have some pretty good moderate to heavy rain coming through. pacific heights and also into the heart of san francisco you can see we are looking at some pretty wet roads up there. it looks like the showers will mainly last a few minutes but they have been coming through and we believe we could see towards presidio boulevard and second avenue a few showers. there is a potential for maybe some hail and also a slight chance for a stunned thunderstorms as well. we'll keep you updated as well as talk about the winter storm warning that is in effect a little bit later. here is george with traffic. good morning >> good morning we have reports of extremely heavy rain reducing visibility and hydroplaning here on interstate 580. the worst problems have been reported in the nine

outside oklahoma city. officials say at least 10 people were taken to hospitals. texas got a double dose of bad weather a.25-year-old man was killed near houston after a tree fell on his pickup. snow covered the ground in longview and turned dallas into a winter wonderland. and blizzard blizzard warnings stretched from arkansas to pennsylvania. i'm ed payne reporting. >>> news time right now 6:31. the people of newtown, connecticut observed christmas with heavy hearts. it's been less than two weeks since the shooting at sandy hook elementary school claimed the lives of 20 children and six adults. a candlelight vigil was held all day long in newtown. 26 candles were lit monday at midnight. the volunteers spent three-hour shifts making sure those candles stayed burning. many people are turning to their faith right now to help them get through this very difficult time. >> we feel our hearts are broken in 26 little pieces, but it's the birth of jesus and we find strength in that, and so we're mourning, but we're also thinking of god at this time, that he'll give us the strength of his son. >

whiteouts on roads across the texas panhandle. there were near-blizzard conditions at day break in amarillo. 250 miles east, just outside oklahoma city, a 21-vehicle pile-up on interstate 40 stopped traffic for five hours. 12 people were injured. one state over in missouri, salt trucks were busy preparing the roads for expected heavy snowfall. transportation officials mark sheldon warned holiday travelers. >> certainly, those roads are slick. if you don't have to get out, please don't get out. >> reporter: the storm system caused heavy snow in the midwest, brought heavy rains and wind to the south, and shrouded the city of atlanta in fog. at least two reported tornadoes touched down in the houston area. one man was killed when a toppled tree flattened his pickup truck. by mid-afternoon, nearly 70,000 people in the houston area were without power. meteorologist david bernard says it's only going to get worse. >> this is a wide-ranging storm, as far as impacts go. there's a tornado threat in the south all the way into the southeast for tomorrow. north of that, arkansas into tennessee

heavy rainfall from time to time yesterday throughout the day. at times the rain came down at the rate of .2" an hour and in santa rosa the rain just hasn't stopped in nearly a month. up there in sonoma county, they have gotten 15 inches of rain since november 28th. that's more than a foot of rain in just four weeks. and the threat of more flooding is causing concerns along san fransesquito creek on the peninsula. a new layer of sandbags is on the levee along the creek in east palo alto. there's already been flooding from verbena to daphne way. some homes were evacuated after water seeped through a levee. >> we had to leave everything behind. >> we had a bad christmas so we're ready to move on. >> there is one home that's still vacant because water do into electrical outlets making it too dangerous to occupy. east palo alto is working to fix it including increasing the creek as capacity to carry water. >> and that rain continues this morning, right? >> elizabet? >> hi-def doppler is busy. we are not away from the wet weather yet. we have been seeing a couple of different new accid

midwest and a winter storm watch has been issued for parts of new england. at least three deaths are being blamed on yesterday's storms. a series of twisters from the deep south blew off roofs and knocked down power lines. icy roads caused a 21-vehicle pile-up in oklahoma, and more than 500 flights were canceled nationwide. edward lawrence is in washington. edward, good morning. >> reporter: these were vicious, fast-moving storms that ripped across the south. in addition to the deaths, the work crews in the south are working to restore the power in at least five states because of the tornadoes and the blizzard conditions in the midwest. >> reporter: a christmas day tornado tore three mobile, alabama. >> there it is. >> joe michael love pulled out his cell phone to record the twister while miles away it destroyed a church and homes and his son's high school. >> the van is almost destroyed. the fieldhouse is gone. just all the portable buildings for classrooms are gone. >> reporter: here in houston, texas, the tornado destroyed some buildings and tore down power lines. francis lowe

it's working to open at least one lane later this week but it has no estimate on what day that might be. >>> we're going to turn now to ktvu chief meteorologist bill martin who's been monitoring all of these storms and which places are getting reallily soaked. >> it came down for some time. it was steady and sometime in the afternoon it really started to hammer. take a look at the last few hours and you can see that over the last few hours those oranges and reads down in the santa clara valley that's when it was really coming down. you can see by the oakland area, by skyline boulevard you have some light showers there. some showers down around san leandro we head out toward beach front boulevard near belmont. you see showers there. how about roson avenue getting heavy activity. at least toward campbell. but as we worked our way toward evergreen and san felipe road you see significant rainfall on these bands. you touch on here an we show you rainfall bands at .2 an hour. that's significant rain and you head down toward the corridor and gilroy. they were getting hammered for a time today
